After graduating from San Jose State, Mrs. Fitzgerald and her husband started their family. When her children were ready for preschool, she volunteered in the classroom and found she enjoyed the environment. Soon Mrs. Fitzgerald was offered a paying job at the preschool and she realized there was a career opportunity for her. She went back for her Master’s degree and eventually became the director of the preschool.

Livermore Unified School District’s Adult Education center approached Mrs. Fitzgerald to run their new Parenting program. “I loved it,” she says. “The interaction with the parents was very emotional. And seeing how your contributions can affect children positively is amazing. Parents are often isolated from their families and their old friends, so to have a shared experience with new acquaintances – they have been able to form lifelong friendships. Because I live in the community I see the parents around town 15 years later and they are still so thankful for the experience of the class.”

Mrs. Fitzgerald believes ECD programs are now more critical than ever. “Children used to be in preschool for 3 hours a day. Now they are in a day care center for 10 hours. The adults around them have a significant impact on their development. The teachers in the need to be highly qualified.”
