Four stand-alone classes are available on various research skills needed by today’s student. Taught in a workshop-style format, each class will meet just twice and is worth a .5 unit credit each. Held in the library’s instructional computer lab area, these four classes provide basic library and research skills that will be useful in any academic or work environment.

Introduction to research techniques in a college library: print and audiovisual materials. Learn the use of the library catalog, organization of materials in the library, use of reference materials, evaluation techniques, and MLA / APA citation formats for books, audiovisuals, and print periodicals.

Introduction to research techniques in a college library: specialized research databases. Learn use of subject databases that emphasize full-text materials on discipline specific topics, such as literature, pro-con issues, and gender topics. Practice MLA /APA citation formats for articles from these databases.

Introduction to research techniques on the Internet. Learn web search strategies, appropriate search engines and directories, evaluation techniques for web resources, and MLA / APA citation formats for web resources.
Introduction to research techniques in a college library: periodicals and general research databases. Learn the use of research databases to find full-text magazine and journal articles, search strategies, differences between scholarly journals and popular magazines, evaluation techniques, and MLA / APA citation formats for database articles.
