LPC Counseling Notes

2/09 Non-Emergency Healthcare for Non-Insured Students.

Mental Health Referrals:

  • Access (Acute Crisis Care and Evaluation for System wide Services) 1-800-491-9099

10/08 OSHA Training Center. The center is located at the Chabot Las Positas district offices. The phone # there is 1-866-936-6742. This is a state given designation CLPCCD was awarded.

9/08 LPC Certificates of Achievement for IGETC and CSU-GE have been approved effective immediately. Student benefits include:

*** Ability to participate in LPC commencement ceremonies (subject to timely graduation application)
*** Transcripted notation of IGETC or CSU-GE completion
*** Tangible record of completing an educational goal at Las Positas College

This does not replace our current process for CSU-GE or IGETC certification. When completing an official GE certification, please also complete a "Petition for Graduation" for the Certificate of Achievement, and submit for evaluation.

5/07 Verifying Prerequisites for Courses In-Progress at Other Colleges (per Pam, Sylvia, Jeff)

  1. Student brings an email or letter from the professor that they are in good status to pass the course.
  2. Counselor uses this information to override the pre-req, and sends an email to Jeff Lawes in admissions and records which gives the students name, W # and the course.
  3. Jeff will check the records at a time certain during the Summer semester, if the student has not submitted their updates transcript, they will be warned, then dropped.

Sylvia is working with IT to create a new attribute code that counselors can use when doing this type of override, that could eventually eliminate the email step to Jeff. The overarching approach is that we will work diligently with students to get them in, and then it is their responsibility to stay in.

11/06 Instructor Approval Now Needed to Re-Register in Class (per Nancy Wright). If a student is failing a class and needs to repeat it the following semester, an instructor must sign a registration card to verify that the student is not passing (rather than a counselor). A and R wants to make sure students don't take up a seat if they are really going to pass.

9/06 LPC Policy Regarding Prior College Transcripts for Financial AID SEPs or VA Evaluations (Schriebman)

We do not require a student to submit a transcript from every college they ever attended prior to conducting an SEP for financial aid purposes; however, if they have indicated to us that they intend to receive prior credit from another institution, they are required to submit the official transcript before the SEP is conducted.

They may have attended a college and earned all D's or F's in which case they don't wish to have a transcript included. OUR college policy allows them this choice, and so does LPC. If a student wishes to transfer credit from any previous college, then they first must submit transcripts before an SEP is written. I have heard from counselors that they feel all transcripts should be evaluated, and that in the case of UC or CSU transfer, the four year institutions require all prior transcripts so it's in the best interest of the student to do so here at LPC.

As for VETERANS, that is an entirely different situation. The VA mandates that ALL prior college transcripts must be evaluated. End of story. It IS absolutely appropriate to refuse to make a Veterans Evaluation appointment until all transcripts are submitted.

NOTE: In evaluating prior credit which fulfills GE/major requirements (question #2 on VA form), you must include elective courses that will count toward unit and/or graduation requirements. Also include the units for the DD214 from question #1 in question #2.

5/06 Concurrent Enrollment Students Cannot Access Assessment Scores on CLASS-Web (Roni Jennings). They have to come in or call for assistance. If the student has granted permission to parent/guardian, we can give their scores or discuss their student status (grades, or whatever). Please forward these calls to Debbie Earney or myself.

5/06 LPC Students Attending High School Dances. We will have college students that will be attending local high school dances this month. Please forward them to Karen Kit. If I am not available, A&R can verify that student is a current registered student and will get an administrator's signature.

5/06 --Important Guidelines for Writing VA Evaluations (Andi Scriebman) This is extremely important to be in compliance with Veteran's Administration Regulations and to be able to continue to certify veterans for their benefits. Please feel free to contact either Todd Steffan or Andi Schriebman if you have questions after reading this information

  • OFFICIAL transcripts from ALL prior colleges MUST be on file and USED when writing a Veteran's Evaluation (even if no units were completed).
  • 'PRIOR CREDIT which CSU will grant ...' section MUST be completed
  • 'All prior credit which fulfills GE/major requirements....' section MUST be completed
  • Although LPC does not grant credit, CSU does and it varies by campus

5/06 Process for Students Petitioning to Take Spanish 1B or Beyond. (per Andrea Alvarado) For students wishing to take Spanish 1B, 2A, or 2B who have completed high school coursework, the process is as follows:

  1. Give the student the purple "Instructor Initiated Approval Form"
  2. Refer student to the instructor of the course (ideally before the course begins but during the first class is OK)
  3. The instructor will assess that student, make a recommendation, and sign the form if approved for the course
  4. He/she sends it on to get signed by Academic Services and then Dean of Student Services,
  5. If approved, student is called by Roni Jennings
  6. The student will bring the form to A&R and enroll in the course.
