Global Studies
The Global Studies program is committed to providing students with a deep understanding of human cultures, behavior, and society and a transnational understanding of the central issues facing our world today. Students will also develop cross-cultural competencies, learning to balance personal and cultural beliefs with different ways of thinking, understand and work through conflict, and navigate cross-cultural interaction in their communities, work relationships, civic life, and travel experiences. Faculty in the program support students' development of expertise in the kinds of critical thinking, reading, and writing demanded by different disciplines as well as facility with interdisciplinary thinking.

Students who take courses in the program will enjoy a broad, interdisciplinary education that will prepare them to work in diverse settings in diverse types of places, whether close to home, in major urban centers, or in other countries. Global Studies majors, with further study, go into a variety of fields, including politics, government, law, international business, academics, advocacy, journalism, non-profit work, publishing, the arts, research, and more. Understanding the global dimensions of societal developments and challenges will boost students' critical thinking skills and make them valuable assets to future employers.
Global Studies Courses
GS 1 - Introduction to Global Studies
3 units
This course looks at the economic and political forces that have led to rapid changes in global interaction and culture over the past century, with special emphasis on the last twenty years. It explores the issues of nationalism, global citizenry, state violence, terrorism, the global economy, migration, the threatened environment, technology, and the role of multinational media industries on culture. Students who have completed, or are enrolled in, SOC 5 may not receive credit. Strongly Recommended: SOC 1 with a minimum grade of C, ENG 1A with a minimum grade of C. 54 hours lecture. AA/AS GE. GS 2 - Global Issues
3 units
This course introduces students to the origins, current status, and future trends of major transnational issues confronting the global community. Topics can include population trends, economic development and inequality, basic human needs (for food, water health care), human rights, international conflict and security concerns, and environmental problems. The course also focuses on global governance, including the study of collective global responsibilities. Strongly Recommended: ENG 104 with a minimum grade of P. 54 hours lecture. AA/AS GE.
