About the Program
The Journalism and Media Studies (JAMS) program provides students with a broad understanding of the principles, roles, techniques, and effects of media in society. Students use these principles to produce media for student media outlets, including the newspaper, the radio station, the journalistic magazine, the literary magazine, and related multimedia forums. Students who earn a degree or certificate in Mass Communications may enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year school. The program includes two degrees and two certificates, allowing students to select the career or transfer pathway best suited to their educational goals.
About the Certificate
The Las Positas College Certificate of Achievement in Journalism provides specific hands-on training that will prepare students for immediate job entry, especially involving broadcast and technology. The certificate has a broad-based focus that services to hone and refine students’ reading, writing, speaking, cultural literacy, and critical thinking skills, enabling them to succeed in an academic environment or in the workplace.
The Certificate of Achievement in Journalism provides a solid foundation and preparation for entry-level careers in reporting, public relations, print production, copyediting, broadcasting, videography, photography, and media technology.
- Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Journalism, students are able to demonstrate an understanding of different aspects of the role of media in society through research and writing.
- Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Journalism, students are able to participate in the creation of student media, following a timeline for production, editing and formatting content, and publishing and distributing.
- Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Journalism, students are able to recognize, acquire, produce, and distribute content for the weekly college newspaper, The Express, demonstrating increasing understanding of standards of journalism and design.
