About the Program
The Foreign Language program offers primarily first- and second-year transfer-level courses in American Sign Language, Spanish, French, and Italian. Some courses are scheduled on a rotating basis. The transfer-level courses are designed to prepare students to continue with their language studies in upper-division courses after leaving Las Positas College. In addition, there is an emphasis on learning about the culture of the people who speak the individual languages.
About the Certificate
The Certificate of Achievement in Spanish is designed to for students who wish to gain a command of the Spanish language and understand the complex interdependence of the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. This certificate is applicable to students who are planning to pursue a Spanish major or minor at a four year college or university. This certificate is also appropriate for students who are currently employed or seeking employment in an area involving the use of Spanish. Students who successfully complete this certificate will be able to use the target language to communicate with Spanish speaking colleagues or customers. Students could include the Certificate on their resume and in a portfolio, indicating a conversational level of Spanish language proficiency.
Program Outcomes
- Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Spanish, students are able to demonstrate oral competence in the Spanish Language by using correct grammar, vocabulary, and appropriate register
- Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Spanish, students are able to demonstrate written competence in the Spanish language by using correct grammar, vocabulary, and appropriate register.
- Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Spanish, students are able to have a clear understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
- Upon completion of the Certificate of Achievement in Spanish, students are able to
analyze and interpret Spanish texts according to their cultural, literary and/or linguistic
content.
