
Frequently Asked Health Questions
Q: Is medical insurance needed or billed?
A: No, services are available to all enrolled students that pay a health fee
Q: Are any services available to faculty and staff of the college?
A: Tuberculosis tests are available and the $25 charge is billed to the district for continuing employees.
Q: Are blood tests done at the Student Health Center?
A: Tests are ordered and paid for at the Health Center. The blood is drawn at Quest Diagnostics Drawing stations located throughout the Tri-Valley.
Q: Are prescription medications available?
A: No prescription medication is kept at the center. If a prescription is needed, it will be written only after an exam. The student may have it filled at the pharmacy of their choice.
Q: Who pays the health fees?
In accordance with state community college regulations, all enrolled students will be charged a Health Service Fee of $14 per semester.
The only exceptions are :
- Students who are taking classes held only on Saturday or at an off campus site, or
- Students who rely on prayer for healing in accordance with teachings of a bona fide religious sect, denomination, or organization may see exemption from the fee and services. To apply for a waiver, students must provide a statement of such reliance from an official of the sect, denomination or organization to the Office of the Vice president of Student Services.
Q: Who are the providers and what are their credentials?
Robert Santos - MD, Medical Director, ValleyCare Occupational Health Services
Dr. Santos received his medical degree from George Washington School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. He is board certified in internal medicine and is an active staff member at ValleyCare Hospital. He has been in private practice in the Tri-Valley for over 15 years.

NP Barbero received her BSN followed by her MSN degree in Family Practice From Samuel Merritt College in 2000. She is a licensed family nurse practitioner with over 14 years of extensive health care experience. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau, international honor society of nursing, California Coalition of Nurse Practitioners, the Pacific Coast College Health Association, American College Health Association, and Health Services Association of California Community Colleges. NP Barbero serves on the Governor's Prevention Advisory Counsel representing California Community Colleges. NP Barbero's medical philosophy is adopted from the ACHA " Prevent when possible, treat when needed, and empower always". She believes strongly that the secret to good health is consistently striving to "live well" mind, body, and spirit.
