LPC Hosts 13th Annual High School Science Bowl!

Saturday, January 28, 2012 - 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Winners go to National Competition in Washington, D.C. (Apr. 26-30)

Livermore, CA - January 30, 2012 - And the winner is.... Irvington High School from Fremont, which edged out Foothill High School from Pleasanton in the championship round late Saturday afternoon.

I wish to express my deep and sincere appreciation to everyone here who helped make the event a huge success. I received many compliments and expressions of gratitude from parents, coaches and volunteers for both the college hosting the event as well as how nice the college and campus looked. There were also more than a few expressions of surprise for how much we've grown, especially from folks who hadn't been on campus in a year or two. All in all, a very good day for the college, Sandia, and certainly the teams who participated.

Next up, the middle schoolers on February 25. I'm told, by the way the registration and geographic boundaries work out this year, that teams that finished first and third at the Nationals last year will be competing with us this year. Should be interesting.

*****

It is time once again for Las Positas College, in conjunction with our partner and co-sponsor from Sandia National Lab, to host the 2012 Regional Science Bowl for high school students here on campus. The event is this Saturday, January 28, and will run from about 8:00 until about 4:00. This will be the 13th year in a row for us to host this regional competition.

We are expecting a full complement of 24 teams (with some schools possibly sending more than 1 team) from all over the area, including one, evidently, from San Diego. As has always been the case in previous years, participants are told that parking permits will not be required. I will publish the list of teams in a separate e-mail.

The schedule for Saturday is as follows:

8:00 - 8:45 AM Registration and Breakfast at the Student Center, Building 1700
8:45 - 9:20 Welcome, Announcements, Pairings in the Main Stage Theater
9:20 Begin Round 1 (Classrooms)
12:00 Noon Lunch (Provided) in the Student Center
1:00 PM Elimination Rounds begin in the Main Stage Theater
around 3:30/4:00 Awards Ceremony

There is a round robin competition in the morning, with the brackets determined by a random drawing. Each round is about ½ an hour, with teams scurrying from room to room in between the rounds, as each team will play the other teams in their bracket. The top teams from each bracket will advance to the final elimination rounds after lunch.

Our regional winner will go to the national competition in Washington D.C. April 26-30 to compete against the 63 or so other regional winners to crown a national champion. Our regional winners always fare well, once being the national runner up. This is always a great publicity/outreach opportunity for us.
