Learn more about these orientations, which are NOT course-specific.
How This Class Operates
This is not a self-paced class; there are due dates throughout the semester that you are expected to meet, just like in a traditional, face-to-face class. Active participation is required.
There are 36 multiple choice and True/False chapter quizzes. Each quiz is worth a total of 25 points. Total possible for all chapter quizzes is 900. There are also six written assignments using cases from the text. Each written assignment is worth 100 points.
In addition, there are 18 Discussion Board topics, one for each chapter. Participate in as many as possible. There are 100 points possible in this area, so you should be active in no less than 10 topic discussions.
How much time online time are we talking about here?
That is hard to put into hours and minutes. But as a guide, remember that in a regular 3-unit class, you should allocate 2 to 3 hours per week for every hour spent in the classroom. So, a 3-unit class that meets 3 times a week would require 6 to 9 hours outside preparation. For this class, I would plan to spend about 6 hours or so online each week for each chapter.
Class Activities
Aside from the chapter quizzes and Discussion Board postings, students will complete the six written assignments, and each paper must be a minimum of 1,000 words in length. The bibliography must contain at least 4 citations, one of which should be the textbook.
How Students are Graded
For the six written assignments, grading will be based on: a) material used from the chapter(s); b. additional information (with sources) researched by the student; c) whether the student followed the directions given in the exercise; and d) whether correct English grammar, spelling, and sentence structure is used throughout the paper.
There are 1600 points possible for the course.
36 chapter quizzes @ 25 points each = 900
Six written assignments @ 100 points each = 600
Discussion Board topics @ 10 points each = 100
Total Points = 1600
1440 - 1600 = A (90%)
1280 - 1439 = B (80%)
1120 - 1279 = C (70%)
960 - 1119 = D (60%)
959 and below = F
Succeeding in an Online Course
Students who succeed in online courses tend to be independent, self-motivated learners with good computer skills. If you are a procrastinator who relies heavily on the instructor for motivation, can't use a computer too well, have taken less than 21 units of college credit in your lifetime, and/or have a grade-point-average under 2.0, you should probably consider enrolling in a face-to-face course instead.
Also, don't enroll in this class if you believe the myth that learning online requires less effort than learning face-to-face. This course covers the same content and has similar activities as the face-to-face version of the course; only the method of delivery changes.
LPC offers a tutorial called "Succeeding in an online course" that will not only tell you if you are a good fit for online learning, but it also offers many strategies -- among other pertinent information -- that will help you succeed online. Please complete the tutorial.
Blackboard
This course will use the Blackboard course management system as its virtual classroom. To learn how to log in to Blackboard, go to the Blackboard Login Procedures page. Once you enroll, you will not be able to log in until the first day of class.
