MATH 65 - Elementary Algebra

Elementary Algebra will cover many elementary algebra concepts along with applications and visualizations. Elementary concepts, including signed numbers, integer exponents, linear and polynomial equations and inequalities, solving systems of equations and inequalities, and simplifying rational expressions, will be covered in this course.
Prerequisite: Mathematics 107, 107Y (completed with a grade of "C" or higher) or an appropriate skill level demonstrated through the Mathematics asessment process. Equivalent to Mathematics 65A and B and 65X and Y. May not receive credit if Mathematics 65B or 65Y has been completed.
To take this class, you must have daily access to a computer with an Internet connection and experience using a web browser. You will also need to utilize your college Zonemail account. Learn more about Zonemail.

The instructor may drop students who miss the first meeting of a course. The first meeting of online or hybrid Distance Education courses is the first day of the class as specified in the class schedule listing. For these courses, instructors may drop students who do not log into their Blackboard course and/or complete indicated activities by the third day of classes. DE instructors may drop students if they have not submitted work and/or accessed the class for two consecutive weeks.

This class begins Jan 19 and ends May 27.
All class meetings will be online except on the following dates: Mondays 3:00 - 5:15 pm in room 2306 on Jan 26, Feb 23, Apr 6, May 4 and on Friday, May 22 from 3:30 - 5:20 pm in room 2306 (Final Exam). You can attend an OPTIONAL, on-campus orientation to Online Learning on Jan 13 from 1 - 2:30 pm or Jan 14 from 5:30 - 7 pm in Room 2410. A virtual session will be offered on the Internet on Jan 19 from 5:30-7 pm. Learn more about these orientations, which are NOT course-specific.
How This Class Operates
The online learning activities and face-to-face instruction will complement each other in this class. As a result, this combination will maximize your learning while providing you with time flexibility.
Students who succeed in the online portion of hybrid courses tend to be independent, self-motivated learners with good computer skills. If you are a procrastinator who relies heavily on the instructor for motivation and can't use a computer too well, you should probably consider enrolling in a completely face-to-face course instead.
Also, don't enroll in this class if you believe the myth that learning online requires less effort than learning face-to-face. This course covers the same content and has similar activities as the face-to-face version of the course; only the method of delivery partly changes.
LPC offers a tutorial called "Succeeding in an online course" that will not only tell you if you are a good fit for online learning, but it also offers many strategies -- among other pertinent information -- that will help you succeed online. Though the title of the tutorial says "online course", all of it is applicable to the online portion of hybrid courses. Please complete the tutorial.
