Professional Development funds currently cover $250 maximum per year per applicant; however, there are other sources of activity funding available on campus, some directly tied into existing grants. In the event that you wish to apply for any of these sources of grant funding, you will need to first obtain the signature of your grant administrator on all conference request forms prior to submitting them to your Dean or Immediate supervisor.

Basic Skills Initiative: Fall 2016 - Spring 2017

The Basic Skills Committee has allotted $6000 of our 2016-17 funds to support professional development efforts. The committee has agreed to support multiple activities for the Spring 2017 Mandatory FLEX Day: a keynote/plenary speaker and several workshops.

Faculty are eligible to use BSI funds toward the conference of their choice. Please note that you intend to utilize the "BSI Funds" on the Professional Development Activity Request Form. You will still be eligible for Professional Development Activity funding above and beyond the $250 allotted by the Professional Development Committee up to a sum and total approved by the Basic Skills Committee.

Any activity requesting financial support from the BSI fund must adhere to the following requirements:

  • The person requesting funds must be placed on the agenda for the Basic Skills Committee (meets 4th Wednesday of each month). The requestor must clearly explain to the committee how their proposed activity addresses Basic Skills student needs.

  • Please contact Michelle Gonzales or Ashley McHale to be placed on the committee agenda.

One example of a conference you may request supplemental BSI funding for is the Great Teacher's Seminar, set to take place in the early summer of 2017.

Basic Skills Student Outcomes and Transformations Grant: Fall 2016 - Spring 2019

Offers professional development support to English and Math Faculty

  • Support 1: Training faculty in Reading Apprenticeship
  • Support 2: Training faculty in Growth Mindset
  • Support 3: Training faculty in Habits of Mind
  • Support 4: Training faculty in Classroom Management and Effective Student Centered-Activities

Professional Development is specific to instruction of and interaction with (counseling, tutoring) Basic Skills students. Coordinators are working to bring opportunities in these areas on campus throughout the span of the grant.

Any activity requesting financial support must be clearly defined for the benefit of Basic Skills students and should directly relate to one of the above supports or one of the grant’s six objectives. Please see the Basic Skills Transformations Grant Website for more information on the grant’s objectives.

Please contact Don Miller or Elena Cole for more information.

HSI Grant: Fall 2015 - Spring 2020

  • Your salary has to come out of the HSI grant. (this restriction itself automatically disqualifies anybody at the college who has nothing to do with HSI)
  • Professional development needs to be strictly related to working with Hispanics/Latinos. Furthermore, anytime someone attends professional development, they are to report back to the HSI team so we can brainstorm and decide if anything related to this training will be worth implementation. Once again, the grant can only cover the expenses of professional development if you are part of the HSI team.

Contact Rafael Valle for more information about grant funding.

STEM & Biosciences Faculty Grant: Spring 2017

  • There are $2000 available for BioSciences Faculty and $6000 available for STEM Faculty.
  • Faculty are eligible for $500 maximum per fiscal year to use toward the conference of their choice. Please note that you intend to utilize the "STEM and Biosciences Faculty Grant" on the Professional Development Activity Request Form. You will still be eligible for Professional Development Activity funding above and beyond the $250 allotted by the Professional Development Committee up to a sum and total of $750 annually.

Contact Vicki Shipman for more information.
