MESSAGE FROM THE SVO-
Welcome! From the Student Veterans’ Organization
First off, congratulations on making the decision to return to school after years of service to this great country of ours. All of us with the Student Veterans’ Organization offer you an excited thanks and ceremonious welcome.
As any student/veteran at Las Positas College will tell you, we have the privilege of living in a community that offers outstanding support to the student/veterans within it. From scholarships to donations, support services to employment opportunities; the advantages of making your status as a student/veteran known are many. While attending Operation Gateway II throughout the past couple of days, you have undoubtedly seen first hand the vast amount of services currently offered to L.P.C. student/veterans. The quality, abundance, and accessibility of support can be mainly credited to Todd Steffan and the Veterans First Program here at the college. However, without the conspicuous breadth of veterans it serves, the sheer need for such support might not be fully reflected. This collective body of student/veterans is exactly what the S.V.O. aims to represent.
You have much to gain by choosing to become an active member of the S.V.O. First of all, you will automatically become an integral part of perhaps the most highly respected group of students attending L.P.C., as well as a satellite member of the national student/veteran community which offers a support base unparalleled by any other collegiate sub-group. Also, the events we throw are fun! Past events include visiting VA hospital with gifts on Christmas, a Chili Cook-off, Spaghetti fund raiser, meetings off campus, and that’s not to mention Veterans’ Day.
Another advantage to active involvement is prospective access to the new Merited S.V.O. Officer Program we are currently working to implement. This new program is a way for the S.V.O. to provide a legitimized merit to those members who provide a certain level of active involvement by offering them the title of “Student Veterans’ Organization Officer.” This merit, which will come at the bargain of nominal commitment, may be displayed on transfer applications to 4-year Universities and résumés as a prestigious account of extracurricular involvement and leadership.
The S.V.O. holds meetings each first Wednesday of every month at 4:00pm-5:00pm Veterans Resource Center during the regular semester schedule. We like to keep it a relaxed atmosphere in order to mingle and go over any issues our members might like to discuss. We invite you all to attend, and look forward to seeing you there.
See ya’ later!
