  • NTHE 248 Technical Theater in Production

Presenter: John Kelly
Effective Term: Fall 2027

    • Similar to existing noncredit courses 247 and 257, this course allows community members and returning students to participate in theater productions without earning credit.
    • Participants may contribute prior technical theater experience, refresh their skills, or develop new skills while supporting productions throughout the semester.
    • Because the course accommodates a range of experience levels and learning goals, it is not an exact mirror of Theater 148A.
    • It requires the same number of instructional hours as the credit course, but participants may focus on a single area of production or explore multiple areas based on their existing skills, interests, and production needs.

    • There may be changes to programs that are financial aid eligible; further clarification is needed regarding which certificates will be affected.
      • Eligibility would depend on whether completing a certificate improves a student’s financial prospects compared with only having a high school diploma.
      • These changes could affect many ECE programs.
      • Compliance for community colleges would be required by July 2027.
    • Accreditation previously described as “national” or “regional” is now referred to as “institutional”.
      • Discussion regarding Department of Education requirements concerning course acceptance from institutions with different colleges, including for-profit institutions.
      • Institutions would not be required to establish articulation agreements for all courses, but would need to publicly explain why certain courses are not accepted.
    • Data Analytics action from Chancellor’s Office is pending on the TMC.
      • Meeting scheduled for Gender and Women’s Studies.
      • A CTE model curriculum for fire technology exists for community colleges, but there is no TMC; there is interest in expanding the pathway.
      • Beginning Fall 2027, the partial certification that allowed the CSU Critical Thinking requirement to be deferred will reportedly no longer be permitted; exact scope of this change needs clarification.
