Social Work and Human Services Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T)
About the Program
The Las Positas College Social Work and Human Services program offers courses that lead to an Associate in Social Work and Human Services for Transfer degree. The major requirements for this degree are designed to ensure that students are well-prepared for transfer and for work in the human services field, providing students with the fundamental understanding of the principles of Social Work and Human Services as well as experience in the application of these principles. Participation in Social Work and Human Services classes develops critical thinking, personal growth, cultural sensitivity, active listening, problem sensitivity, presentation skills, and an understanding of the theories, perspectives, principles, and concepts behind Social Work and Human Services. Students will have guaranteed admission to a California State University (CSU) campus in a similar major upon successful completion of the program requirements. Students should speak with a counselor to determine whether or not this degree is the best option for their transfer goals.

Social Work and Human Service graduates may work in a variety of field settings and serve in a variety of capacities. Common entry-level career choices may include: Direct Service Professional; Program Assistant; Social Services Aide; Case Manager; Family Support Specialist; Family Advocate; Patient Advocate; Health Technician; Corrections Worker; Elderly Services Provider; Substance Abuse Worker; Addiction Counselor Assistant; Job Development Worker; Independent Living Specialists; Rehabilitation Aide; WIC Nutrition Assistant; Eligibility Worker; Resource and Referral Specialist; Respite Worker; Outreach Worker. Students completing baccalaureate degrees can find employment in more advanced Social Work, Human Service, Counseling or related occupations, and those completing graduate degrees will be qualified to pursue licensure as a Clinical Social Worker or Marriage and Family Therapist.
Program Outcomes
- Upon completion of the AA-T in Social Work and Human Services, students are able to critically analyze societal factors that create and contribute to social service needs.
- Upon completion of the AA-T in Social Work and Human Services, students are able to demonstrate a foundational understanding of social work and human services outlining the evolution of social welfare and human services in the U.S.
- Upon completion of the AA-T in Social Work and Human Services, students are able to demonstrate an understanding of cultural sensitivity and systems of oppression/ privilege as a foundation to success in the fields of social work and human services.
- Upon completion of the AA-T in Social Work and Human Services, students are able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theoretical perspectives, legal and ethical principles and social issues related to social work and human services fields.
Completion Requirements:
- Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer
to the California State University, including both of the following:
- The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or CA State University General Education – Breadth Requirements.
- A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
- Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT’s) also require that students must earn a "C " (or "P'') or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.
