Computing Seminars - Summer 2020 Schedule
CS41 System and Browser Screen Recorders
Since we will be doing this class completely on-line, your teacher will need to see you actually doing work on Linux. To do this, you will use VMWare and Netlabs to do your work, but you will need to record your screen and then submit those recordings for a grade.
Tools to Record your entire screen
- This method should be used when installing Red Hat Linux in VMWare and other projects
as noted
- Apple Mac: QuickTime Player (free, already installed), File-> New Screen Recording
- Windows: Screen Recorder Pro (free) on the Microsoft Store from within Windows
Record your Internet Browser screen only
- This method should be used when doing Netlabs projects. The recordings are smaller and easier to record for you.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox (it’s best to make sure you have updated it to the latest version before doing this)
- Goto this URL: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/
- Search for Screen Recorder
- Click on Screen Recorder by Alexey Kuznetsov and install it
- A little Screen Recorder icon will be added to the top right of your Firefox browser
- Click the icon to begin a recording
- Click the Capture Screen button
- Drop down Selected Window or Screen and select Mozilla Firefox
- You will need to turn off Remember this decision, then click Allow
- In another tab, load the web page to record and do it
- When done, go back to the Free Screen Recorder tab and click the Stop Capture button
- Click the Download to your Computer button Note: Nothing is actually downloaded - just copied from your browser’s cache
- Select Save File and click OK
- The file has been saved in your Downloads folder like screen-recording.webm. Rename this file with the project title and your name
Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome
- Goto the extension URL: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions
- Search for: Free Screen Recorder
- Click More extensions
- Scroll down to Free Screen Recorder and click Add to Chrome
- A little Free Screen Recorder icon will be added to the top right of your Chrome browser
- Click the icon to begin a recording
- Click the Start button below the little screen image
- Click Application Window, click your Google Chrome browser window
- Click Share A little Free Screen Recording window is shown at the bottom of your screen - ignore it
- In another tab, load the web page to record and do it.
- When done, go back to the Free Screen Recorder tab and click the Stop button
- Click the Download Recording button Note: Nothing is actually downloaded - just copied from your browser’s cache
- Click the up-arrow carrot next to the file (bottom of the window) and select Show in Folder
- The Downloads window will open and a file named ”RecordedVideo.webm” should be there. Rename this file appropriately based on the project title and your name
