About the Program
The mission of Ironworkers Apprenticeship Training program is intended to ensure that
union ironworkers have the skills,
knowledge, and training necessary to be safe on the jobsite, competitive in the workplace,
and satisfied in their careers. This
program ensures that local and shop members in Northern California receive the comprehensive
and effective education and
training that will enable them to carry out their work safely and efficiently while
meeting the highest standards of quality.
About the Degree
The Shop Ironworker Associates Degree provides basic through advanced level skills and knowledge based coursework intended to set up a Journey level ironworker necessary for a successful and rewarding career as a shop ironworker. Lecture based classroom work leads to knowledge that is used for practical shop floor applications covered in hands on skills laboratories. Blueprints, welding, layout, labor studies as well as safety is covered.

Shop Ironworker, Ornamental Iron Fabricator, Metal Fabricator, and Welder Fitter.
Program Outcomes
- Upon completion of the AS in Shop Ironworker, students are able to operate safely in an ironworker shop environment.
- Upon completion of the AS in Shop Ironworker, students are able to demonstrate AWS code quality welding.
- Upon completion of the AS in Shop Ironworker, students are able to demonstrate the ability to read and interpret blueprints used in the ironworker shop.
- Upon completion of the AS in Shop Ironworker, students are able to demonstrate the ability to layout and fabricate steel stairs and handrail.
- Upon completion of the AS in Shop Ironworker, students are able to describe the benefi ts derived from collective bargaining and union membership.

The Associate Degree is conferred upon those students who complete the required 60 or more semester units of the degree pattern with a grade-point average of 2.0 or better, of which 12 units must be earned at Las Positas College. In addition, students must complete a General Education pattern in order to earn a degree: see the Las Positas College General Education Pattern for Associate of Science (AS) Degree, California State University General Education-Breadth, or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (for CSU) patterns for listing of areas and courses. Double counting courses in GE and the major is permissible. The number of units that may be double counted will depend on the entry point to the degree program, the optional course(s) taken, and the GE pattern selected. Elective units are degree applicable. Consult with an adviser or a counselor to plan the courses necessary to achieve your academic goal.
