Hawks take on West LA at State Championships
The LPC men’s basketball team looks to continue its historic season Friday when it
takes on West Los Angeles College at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the California
Community College Athletic Association’s State Championships at West Hills College
Lemoore.
Coach James Giacomazzi’s Hawks take their school-best 27-3 record into their first state tournament appearance since the program began in 2006. They are the number 4 seed from the North and will face a West LA team that is also 27-3 but enters as the number 1 seed from the South.
Ticket prices for the state championships at West Hills Lemoore's Golden Eagle Arena are $12 for general admission and $8 for all identified students, faculty, staff, senior citizens age 60 and over, and children under 12 years old. Advanced tickets are now available for purchase online at the CCCAA website.
LPC qualified for the state tournament by winning its two games in the Northern California regional playoffs. On March 3, the Hawks beat Porterville 86-76 behind 21 points from forward Malik Jackson, then followed that up two days later by traveling to Sonora and taking down Columbia 62-53 as forward Jordahn Johnson scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The 6-foot-8 Johnson earned All Coast Conference North first-team honors this season, along with his starting guard teammates Dathan Satchell and Lee Jones, Jr. Jackson, along with guard Jorren Edmonds, not only earned honorable mention honors but were selected to the conference All Defensive team.
Johnson leads the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game, while Satchell averages 13.8, and Jones Jr. averages 12.1.
The Hawks’ only losses this season came in overtime to Butte in the season opener and twice to the state’s top-ranked team, San Francisco.
Other matchups Friday at the state tournament are Citrus vs. West Valley at 3 p.m., MiraCosta vs. San Francisco at 5 p.m., and San Bernadino Valley vs. Sequoias at 7 p.m. The tourney continues Saturday with semifinal games at 5 and 7 p.m. It concludes Sunday with the championship game at 3:30 p.m.
