Spanish Courses

SPAN 1A - Beginning Spanish

5 units

This introductory level course offers a balanced approach to language and culture. It will enable students to begin speaking, reading and writing elementary level Spanish as well as understanding the spoken language as they explore the culture and countries of the Spanishspeaking world. Students are introduced to concepts of grammar, vocabulary and verb tenses in a variety of auditory, visual and written contexts. Strongly Recommended: ENG 1A with a minimum grade of C. 90 hours lecture.

SPAN 1B - Elementary Spanish

5 units

This is the second semester of the introductory level course. It continues to offer a balanced approach to language and culture. It enables students to continue learning to speak, read and write elementary level Spanish as well as to understand the spoken language as they explore the culture and countries of the Spanishspeaking world. Students continue to review and improve upon concepts of grammar, vocabulary and verb tenses in a variety of auditory, visual and written contexts. The course will continue to examine the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Prerequisite: SPAN 1A with a minimum grade of C. 90 hours lecture.

SPAN 2A - Intermediate Spanish I

4 units

This course covers a review of grammar, reading of contemporary literature, practice in conversation and composition, and discussion of cultural topics. Prerequisite: SPAN 1B with a minimum grade of C. 72 hours lecture.

SPAN 2B - Intermediate Spanish II

4 units

A course covering the reading of contemporary works, advanced review of grammar emphasis on speaking and composition, and further discussion of cultural topics. Prerequisite: SPAN 2A with a minimum grade of C. 72 hours lecture.

SPAN 21 - Spanish for Spanish Speakers I

5 units

This course is designed for bilingual students whose heritage language is Spanish and for linguistically qualified students. Culture, language structures, basic fundamentals of grammar and composition, and oral and written communication are included in this course. The course provides students with instruction that builds upon their existing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and their cultural heritage and knowledge. The course increases awareness of linguistic registers and introduces a broad range of vocabulary. The course will allow students to discuss topics beyond their familiar routine and enhance their knowledge of Hispanic cultures as manifested in Spanish speaking countries and in the United States. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish. Prerequisites: Spanish heritage speaker proficiency or the equivalent intermediate level as assessed. 90 hours lecture.

SPAN 22 - Spanish for Spanish Speakers II

5 units

This course is the second semester of Spanish for bilingual students. It's designed for students whose heritage language is Spanish and for linguistically qualified students who wish to improve their reading and writing Spanish skills. It continues to provide students with instruction that builds upon their existing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and their cultural heritage and knowledge. The course will continue helping students increase awareness of linguistic registers, discuss topics beyond the students' familiar routine and expand upon appreciation for Hispanic cultures as manifested in Spanish speaking countries and in the United States. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish: oral fluency in Spanish is strongly recommended. Prerequisite: SPAN 21 with a minimum grade of C. 90 hours lecture.

  • Degree Applicable, Credit Grading Option: GR

SPAN 23 - Introduction to Hispanic Literature

3 units

This course is designed for Spanish speakers and for linguistically qualified students who wish to improve their skills to a high-advanced level of reading, writing and literary analysis. The emphasis is on critical thinking and logical and effective support of ideas. Literary discussions will be an important component of the class, but writing composition will also be included, as well as exposure to international Hispanic culture. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish. Prerequisite: Spanish heritage speaker proficiency or the equivalent intermediate level as assessed. Strongly recommended: SPAN 22 with a minimum grade of C or successful completion of AP Spanish in high school. 54 hours lecture.

  • Degree Applicable, Credit Grading Option: OP

SPAN 29 - Independent Study, Spanish

0.5 - 2 units

Independent Study

0.5 - 2 units

Independent Study courses are open to all students and employ many combinations of media and educational techniques to create individualized, self-pacing education. Check with the Counseling Center, Building 1600, concerning transferability of Independent Study courses to four-year institutions. Independent Study is contracted through an instructor for research, field experience, or skill development. Independent Study is offered under many subject areas contained in the Catalog using the number 29. Transfer: CSU; UC credit may be granted only after review of course outline by specific UC campus after transfer. Independent Study courses have a grading option of "OP" unless otherwise indicated.
