4. Old Business

Zero Waste Program (Tandongfor and Climate Fellows)

  • The preliminary rollout of three-stream waste bins has been completed across both campuses. The team is developing marketing and training flyers to encourage proper waste sorting and increase campus awareness, with plans to identify strategic locations for larger signage.

  • An internal kickoff meeting with Vice Chancellor Letcher, the Climate Action Fellows, and William is scheduled to discuss next steps for the Zero Waste initiative. Three of the four Climate Action Fellows from last year are returning, providing continuity to the project.

  • The Committee will receive a more detailed update at the October meeting, and the Zero Waste Initiative will remain on the next agenda.

Facility Concerns (Kerr)

  • Amber Kerr presented concerns regarding rodent control and current pest-management practices on campus. She identified unsecured outdoor waste receptacles as a contributing factor, noting that rodents and other wildlife can easily access campus trash. She also raised concerns about the use, condition, and labeling of poison bait stations and recommended prioritizing wildlife-resistant outdoor waste receptacles and reviewing alternative pest-control methods.

  • Amber proposed reviewing the current pest-control contract and considering non-lethal alternatives as part of a broader integrated pest-management approach.

  • John Seybert and VP Brooks agreed to review the concerns, costs, risks, contractor practices, and potential solutions. John noted that accurate cost information would need to be gathered before comparing the current pest-control contract with replacement outdoor receptacles. The Committee may receive a follow-up update at a future meeting once additional information is available.

5. New Business

Quest Science Center Pollen Collection Collaboration (Cearley)

  • Quest Science Center is proposing a collaborative pollen collection and research project involving Las Positas College, the University of Washington, Stanford Health, and the Allergy and Asthma Medical Group. The project would use traditional and newer AI/machine-learning pollen monitoring equipment to collect East Bay pollen data and evaluate the accuracy of emerging technologies.
  • Quest would provide/loan the monitoring equipment and assist with data collection, while LPC students and faculty could gain access to pollen, weather, and health-related datasets for research and educational opportunities. The equipment would require a secure outdoor location approximately the size of a picnic table with 110V power, Wi-Fi, open-air exposure, and regular access.
  • The Horticulture/Viticulture area was identified as a potential location. John Seybert will work with Daniel Cearley to evaluate possible sites and infrastructure needs, including power, security, and potential equipment noise. The proposal will also be presented to Executive Facilities on October 6 for further discussion.

6. Updates

Campus Construction & Bond Update (Kroll)

  • Ann Kroll provided an update on several campus construction and improvement projects. The Amphitheater project is expected to be completed by the end of October, with a ribbon-cutting planned for November. Construction on the STEAM Building is progressing with foundation work underway and structural steel anticipated in November or December.
  • Additional projects include the Building 500 music renovation, creation of the Building 1600 Pathway Support Center, completion of approximately 90% of campus-wide exterior wayfinding, renovation of Building 1300 into a large lecture/event space, and the final phase of cafeteria lighting planned for winter break.
  • Athletics projects include a soccer scoreboard, 16 pickleball courts, six beach volleyball courts, and reestablishment of the cross-country trail as part of the outdoor athletics project. Plans also include removing the existing track-and-field berm, reusing the soil to create wind barriers, and creating a flatter, more functional area for portable bleachers, tents, vehicles, and events. We are still exploring an expansion of the Viticulture patio area to accommodate larger events and additional shade.

M&O (Seybert)

  • John Seybert reported that M&O is transitioning from its summer project period to its regular service and work-order response period as campus activity and enrollment increase.
  • Two major areas of progress were highlighted. Solar energy production and utilization increased by more than 30% from July 2025 to July 2026, with system operating capacity improving from below 60% to the low 80% range. M&O continues working to improve performance, including replacing eligible solar panels under warranty.
  • M&O has also made significant progress addressing campus tripping hazards identified through a consultant’s campus-wide assessment. Phase 1 work has substantially reduced identified hazards, with additional locations still scheduled for repair. M&O is also working toward increasing custodial service capacity over the next several months as staffing opportunities become available.

District Facilities (Letcher)

  • Kiley Zieker shared that the District Facilities Committee now has faculty representation, with chemistry faculty member Chris Dudzik attending his first meeting last Friday.
  • Jean O’Neil-Opipari also encouraged participation in Earth Science Day on October 14. The event will include daytime tabling with involvement from the Climate Fellows followed by a 4:00pm sustainability presentation by Chris Dudzik, who will also highlight a new sustainability course being offered in the spring.

7. Events

8. Good of the Order

  • Upcoming campus events include the fall theater production Stranger Sings, opening October 29, and an Improv Lab and Jazz Ensemble concert on October 8. The Vocal Ensembles will also perform with the professional group New York Voices in November. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the outdoor amphitheater is also planned for November.
  • Athletics reported that the Women’s Basketball Team recently competed at Delta, while the Men’s Basketball Team will compete in Las Vegas following an earlier tournament in Los Angeles. Water Polo will be traveling for the next several weeks, and both Soccer Teams will host a home doubleheader this Friday.
  • The committee will need to identify a chair for next year.
