AS Drafting Technology, Chabot College
BS Zoology, DePauw University
Subject taught: Design Technology
After graduating from college, Mrs. “B” moved to California and worked as a calligrapher and type designer for a printing company. She learned Computer Aided Design (CAD) and soon was training others to use this new technology. While at Chabot studying Drafting Technology she was offered a teaching spot and has taught here since.
Mrs. “B” describes how the industry has changed drastically in the past few years. “You never see drafting boards any more – it’s all on the computer. Architects used to pass their sketches along to drafts people for them to create blueprints. Now many of my students are skilled trades people, such as carpenters and roofers, who want to use their hands-on skills in a design/build type of business.”
“I think one of the most gratifying aspects of teaching is getting students jobs,” she says. “I get a lot of phone calls with job opportunities and I encourage students who are looking for a job to give me a resume.” Mrs. “B” has placed students in a wide variety of fields such as surveying, contracting, and residential design.
