Las Positas College has a comprehensive ESL Program which includes six levels of instruction: two semesters of beginning, two semesters of intermediate and two semesters of advanced courses. The program focuses on academic language skills: reading, writing, grammar, and oral communication. To complement the instructional program, the College provides assessment, counseling, orientation and special support services, such as free tutoring for all ESL and International students.

Applying to the college and registering for classes includes several steps.

IMPORTANT--The information on the Six Steps to Success webpage does not include the newest information about the ESL Assessment (Step 4). Here is the newest information about the ESL Assessment:
- Due to the COVID-19 situation, we will have a new assessment and placement process for the Fall 2020 semester.
- After you apply to the college (Step 1) and receive your W# (student ID number), send an email to Julia McGurk, the ESL Department Coordinator:
- In the email, include your full name and your W#, and explain that you are a new student, and you want to take the ESL assessment.
- We will send you a reply soon with an explanation of the current assessment and placement process.
- Don't worry, and please be patient. We have lots of space for you in our classes!
