BUSN 61 - Intro to QuickBooks Accounting

Introduction to the use of QuickBooks accounting software to process transactions related to a service company. Specific topics include using company files, sales and receivables, payables and purchases, end of period transactions and payroll. Transactions include journalizing, adjusting entries, closing entries, bank reconciliation and preparing financial statements. Strongly recommended: BUSN 1A or BUSN 51A or equivalent.
To take this class, you must have daily access to a computer with an Internet connection, experience using a web browser, and access to Microsoft Excel. You will also need to utilize your college Zonemail account. Learn more about Zonemail.

The instructor may drop students who miss the first meeting of a course. The first meeting of online or hybrid Distance Education courses is the first day of the class as specified in the class schedule listing. For these courses, instructors may drop students who do not log into their Blackboard course and/or complete indicated activities by the third day of classes. DE instructors may drop students if they have not submitted work and/or accessed the class for two consecutive weeks.

This class begins Jan 19 and ends May 27.
There are no required on-campus meetings for this class. You can attend an OPTIONAL, on-campus orientation to Online Learning on Jan 13 from 1 - 2:30 pm or Jan 14 from 5:30 - 7 pm in Room 2410. A virtual session will be offered on the Internet on Jan 19 from 5:30-7 pm. Learn more about these orientations, which are NOT course-specific.
How This Class Operates
This is not a self-paced class; there are due dates throughout the semester that you are expected to meet, just like in a traditional, face-to-face class.
But there are no specific times when students will need to be logged on to Blackboard. In that respect this course may be considered somewhat self-paced.
To take this course, students will need to have a PC computer and be able to download and install the free trial version of the QuickBooks Premier 2015 software that is available by following the instructions in Chapter 1 of the assigned textbook using the access code card that comes with new copies of the textbook.
PLEASE NOTE: There are no computers with QuickBooks on campus for students to use.
Students will not be able to complete this course using Macintosh computers. The QuickBooks software that comes with the textbook will not work on a Mac, and the Mac version of QuickBooks does not have all the features of the PC desktop version that will be required in order to do the assignments for the course.
Used or rented textbooks may not come with an access card for the free trial of the software at all or, if it does come with one, you may not be able to use it since that may have already been done by the previous owner of the book and you won’t be able to download it again.
So if you do not already have QuickBooks 2015 Premier for PC desktops/laptops, purchase only a new copy of the textbook to get the software.
NOTE: You cannot get a free trial version of the necessary QuickBooks software except by purchasing a new copy of the textbook with access card package.
Students will also not be able to complete this course using any version of QuickBooks other than the Premier version for PC desktops/laptops like the one that comes with the assigned textbook.
This means that Pro, Enterprise, Simple Start or any online versions of QuickBooks will not work for this course. Older editions of QuickBooks such as 2014 will also not work for this course.
The class is divided into modules that will be accessible from the Assignment & Quizzes area in Blackboard. Each module will have reading assignments, activities in the assigned textbook to be submitted via Blackboard, quizzes and discussion board assignments to be done on Blackboard.
Estimated time commitment required for this course: As a guide, students should allocate 2 to 3 hours per week of outside preparation (reading and doing assignments) for every credit hour of a course. This means for a 1.5 unit course students should expect to spend 1.5 hours per week for "class" time plus an additional 3 to 4.5 hours per week reading and doing assignments. So to successfully complete this course, allocate at least 4.5 to 6 hours per week. This is just a guide. Some of you may need more than this to complete assignments by due dates.
Communications will take place via the class discussion board and email.
Assignments for each of the 9 chapters are QuickBooks activities that require students to have the assigned textbook, since that is where the assigned activities will be found, and the specific version of the QuickBooks program that comes with the textbook, since that will be required to do the activities.
Chapter Quizzes: There is one quiz for each of the 9 chapters. These are multiple choice and true/false questions on the material covered in each chapter and are open notes and open textbook.
Discussion Board Assignments: There are one or more discussion board assignments in each of the modules of the course.
Final Exam: The final exam will be a written assignment to be submitted via Blackboard. It is also open notes and open textbook.

There are 1070 points possible for the course.
17 Discussion Board assignments @ 10 points each = 170
9 Quizzes @ 25 points each = 225
8 Chapter Assignments @ 45 points each = 360
6 End-of-Chapter Problems @ 120 points total if all 6 correctly completed = 120
1 Final Exam @ 195 points possible = 195
A = 951 - 1070 points
B = 855 - 950 points
C (P) = 800 - 854 points
D = 745 - 799 points
F = less than 745 points
Succeeding in an Online Course
Students who succeed in online courses tend to be independent, self-motivated learners with good computer skills. If you are a procrastinator who relies heavily on the instructor for motivation, can't use a computer too well, have taken less than 21 units of college credit in your lifetime, and/or have a grade-point-average under 2.0, you should probably consider enrolling in a face-to-face course instead.
Also, don't enroll in this class if you believe the myth that learning online requires less effort than learning face-to-face. This course covers the same content and has similar activities as the face-to-face version of the course; only the method of delivery changes.
