Mr. Jolly was lucky to have a math teacher in high school who was a good mentor to him and encouraged him to consider teaching as a career. “I didn’t want to work 8-5 and 50 weeks a year” he says. “I wanted to travel and have a flexible schedule which would let me spend time with my family.” Since he had found math easy, he decided to study Mathematics Education and got a job teaching high school math after graduation.
As computers became more popular, Mr. Jolly went back for his MS. Since people with Master’s degrees in Computers as well as teaching experience were rare at the time, colleges were aggressively recruiting him to teach. He chose Chabot College, then transferred to Las Positas College because it was closer to his home in Pleasanton.
When not teaching, Mr. Jolly runs Academic Programmers (http://www.academicprogrammers.com) which supplies software and consulting services to many colleges and universities.
