ESL 121A: Intermediate Writing I
Context
Given written prompts based on assigned reading, students will be able to select one prompt and write an interesting and original essay in two hours.
Objective
Students will produce an essay of three or more paragraphs that demonstrates appropriate and coherent writing with the following traits:

Organization
- format: title, paragraphs indented, margins, double spaced
- thesis statement in an introductory paragraph
- appropriate transitions
- conclusion
Development
- demonstrates an understanding of the reading
- focuses on the thesis with coherence
- uses learned methods of organization appropriate to the prompt
- contains supporting paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details, explanations, or examples
- demonstrates coherence, thoughtful reasoning, and original ideas
Language
- learned sentence structure: simple, compound and complex sentences
- correct learned punctuation
- correct spelling and appropriate use of basic and learned vocabulary
- appropriate use of learned verb tense and form
- evidence of self-editing
