Check the college catalog for CSU/UC transferability and to see if this course meets AA/AS degree requirements.
The instructor may drop students who miss the first meeting of a course. The first meeting of online or hybrid Distance Education courses is the first day of the class as specified in the class schedule listing. For these courses, instructors may drop students who do not log into their Blackboard course and/or complete indicated activities by the third day of classes.
This class begins Sept 1 and ends Dec 21.
To take this class, you must already have a paid job where you work at least five hours per week, or a volunteer position with at least four hours of work per week. Please visit the Work Experience Seminar & Fieldwork web site and the Frequently Asked Questions page for important information about the 95/96 course combination.
Work
Experience enriches personal and professional development through the
study and application of valuable career development skills. It
requires concurrent enrollment in the one-unit seminar (96) and
variable unit fieldwork at the students' workplaces (95). It is the
student's responsibility to register for the correct number of 95
units; see Frequently Asked Questions. Through the development of
learning objectives, students improve their self-management,
organizational, and performance skills.

How This Class Operates
This is not a self-paced class; there are due dates throughout the semester that you are expected to meet. Communications will take place primarily via email, which students need to check regularly. The online learning activities and face-to-face instruction will complement each other in this class. As a result, this combination will maximize your learning while providing you with time flexibility.
Class Activities
Class attendance at the four face-to-face meetings is required and counts for half of your grade. In the event of a scheduling conflict, students are permitted to attend the alternate section class meeting for the month. Two topics are covered each month: career assessment and time management; resume and cover letter writing; workplace relationships and communications, and conflict management; and job interviewing and career management. Classroom activities include lecture, discussion, and writing.
Class Project(s)
Depending upon the project, assignments are submitted in hard copy and/or via email to the instructor. They include short answer responses, an online career assessment activity, a resume and cover letter, assigned readings, and final learning objectives. There are no tests in this class.
How Students are Graded
The grading structure is as follows:
Face to Face Seminars 100 points
Learning Objectives 50
Resume 25
Assignments 25
Total Points 200
Succeeding Online
Students who succeed in the online portion of hybrid courses tend to be independent, self-motivated learners with good computer skills. If you are a procrastinator who relies heavily on the instructor for motivation and can't use a computer too well, you should probably consider enrolling in a completely face-to-face course instead.
Also, don't enroll in this class if you believe the myth that learning online requires less effort than learning face-to-face. This course covers the same content and has similar activities as the completely face-to-face version of the course; only the method of delivery partly changes.
LPC offers a tutorial called "Succeeding in an online course" that will not only tell you if you are a good fit for online learning, but it also offers many strategies -- among other pertinent information -- that will help you succeed online. Though the title of the tutorial says "online course", all of it is applicable to the online portion of hybrid courses. Please complete the tutorial.
Blackboard
This course will use the Blackboard course management system as its virtual classroom. To learn how to log in to Blackboard, go to the Blackboard Login Procedures page. Once you enroll, you will not be able to log in until the first day of class.
