Allied Health Home
Opportunities for skilled technicians, assistants, and clerks in the Allied Health field are growing at a rapid pace across the State of California. This is particularly true in the Tri-Valley area where the delivery of medical care to residents is the fastest growing industry cluster in the region.
The Allied Health program at Las Positas College offers focused career pathways for students with diverse skill levels and interests. These pathways include Clinical, Health Administrative Support, Health and Human Services, and Transfer Science.
- Clinical pathway: The Clinical pathway offers a Certificate and a Degree program in Surgical Technology*, which prepares students with the knowledge and skills they will need to be a Surgical Technician. Surgical Technicians prepare operating rooms and assist doctors before, during and after surgery.
- Emergencey Medical Technician pathway: An examination preparatory program in Emergency Medical Technology (EMT), which prepares students with the training to become first-responders in the event of a medical emergency.
- Health Administrative Support pathway: The Health Administrative Support pathway has a Certificate program for Administrative Medical Assistant*, which prepares students for a front office position in a medical office or clinic answering inquiries, obtaining information, and scheduling appointments.
- Health and Human Services pathway: The Health and Human Services pathway has a Certificate program in Health & Human Services, which enables students to work as community health workers, substance abuse counselors, and case workers.
- Transfer Science pathway: The Transfer Science pathway provides a freshman and sophomore student the lower division general education requirements for transfer to a four-year college or university. Students may also complete their major field preparatory courses by taking a Transfer Science program at Las Positas, however, courses should be selected carefully to meet the requirements of the intended transfer institution. Occupations for this career pathway include medicine and scientific research.
* Both Certificate and Degree Programs pending approval at the State Chancellor’s Office, expected to be offered 2008-2009 and/or 2009-2010.
