Intercollegiate Athletics Academic Support Services

Student athletes are striving to succeed in two demanding areas simultaneously- academics and athletics. Student athletes have the responsibility of developing and working toward an educational goal as well as training in their sport.

The Academic Support program at Las Positas College is a cooperative effort between the Athletics Department, Academic Services, Student Services, the Faculty, and the Student Athletes. We are dedicated to helping our student athletes attain their academic success.

The goal of Las Positas College is to educate students through the first two years of college. Students may earn an associate degree, certificate of achievement, and/or prepare to transfer to a four-year college or university. The Academic Support program at Las Positas College is committed to:

ACE promotes and enhances students' academic skills through individual and group tutoring, study groups, workshops, adjunct courses, and providing a quiet and convenient place to study.

In providing these services, the Athletics works closely with other academic support units on campus such as Student Services and the LPC Tutorial Center. Our tutors have a professional commitment to education and undergo a rigorous screening and training process that emphasizes working collaboratively with students.

In an effort to support the academic success of our Student Athletes, all athletes are required to log at least 3 hours/week at ACE during any of the hours of operation. Individual coaches may require additional hours. These hours are separate from any course that may require logged hours.

Student Athletes who earn a 3.0 or higher in their academic coursework during their first year of play may request an exemption from this ACE policy.

Academic Advising

Fall 2007 counseling hours: Thursdays 1:00-4:00, in PE147

Our advising staff helps students understand and comply with College, COA and NCAA rules, choose appropriate courses and majors, develop time management skills and resolve personal issues unique to athletes.

Advisors monitor the completion of graduation requirements, suggest enrichment opportunities, check progress toward a degree, explain academic services and procedures.

Each student athlete must meet with a counselor to select courses for study based upon the student's skills, interests, career, degree, or university transfer goals. Students planning to transfer to a four year college and play sports must meet very strict NCAA Rules. A counselor familiar with NCAA Rules and Athletics is available to meet with Student Athletes in the PE Complex.

Student Educational Plan (SEP)

SEPs are strongly recommended for all LPC students. SEPs are required for student athletes. Each student athlete must meet with a counselor to select courses for study based upon the student's skills, interests, career, degree, or university transfer goals. The student athlete will meet with a counselor to develop and/or refine the SEP:

    • prior to or during the first season of play,
    • before the second season of play, and
    • during the second season of play

Academic Progress Reports

Academic Progress Reports are conducted at least three times per semester to help ensure that student athletes are making satisfactory progress in all of their classes. Each instructor will complete a progress report indicating the student’s grade to date, attendance, attitude, need for tutoring, and other comments.

GPA

Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 (a “C” average) from the start of his/her first season of competition forward.
