LPC Library Check-Out & Circulation Policies

Valid College Identification Cards

Las Positas and Chabot College students, faculty, and staff using the Library to borrow circulating items must present their College ID card with the current registration sticker on the back. Students, faculty and staff may get the LPC College I.D. at the Admissions & Records Office. Library materials will be held at the circulation desk for 24 hours or over the weekend while the College ID is obtained. Valid ID cards include:

  • A Las Positas College Student ID card with a current sticker on the back
  • Chabot College Student ID with a current sticker on the back
  • LPC Faculty or Staff ID Card
  • Chabot Faculty or Staff ID Card
  • Las Positas College Advisory Committee Member ID Card

Las Positas College Library High School Student Use Policy

Las Positas College Library allows high school students who are looking for information on topics that are not available in the local high school or public libraries to use the Library resources, including Reference materials. LPC library materials may not be checked out.

A photocopier is available for use at $.10 a page.

Students must plan to do their own research.  The Reference Librarian’s priority is to support LPC students and may not be available to assist with reference questions and detailed searches.

Visiting student researchers may use the Library’s computers only when not in use by LPC students. High school students must check-in with the Reference Librarian before attempting to use the computers. There is a fee for printing from any computer. A PRINT CARD can be purchased from the bookstore or the GoPrint card dispenser in the Library.

Advisory Committe Member Procedure

Any member of an LPC Advisory Committee may request a library card for check out privileges from the Las Positas College Library. Advisory Committee members have Library privileges until the end of the academic year.

  • The Advisory Committees will distribute requests at regular meetings of the committees.
  • The requests will be forwarded by the Dean in charge of the committee to the Library Circulation Desk.
  • The Circulation staff of the library will send the requests to the registrar with a note requesting that an identification card be issued, listing the member’s name, social security number (or alternate number if requested), and name of the advisory committee.
  • The Registrar will return the card with the original request to the Circulation Desk.
  • Staff will enter the information into the library database with an expiration date of the end of the school year. The card will be mailed to the Advisory Committee member by the Library Circulation Desk staff along with a current bookmark listing library hours and checkout policies.
  • A tally will be kept of the number of cards issued or renewed each year. The number will be reported to the Library Coordinator.

Community Members

Members of the community are welcome to use the resources in the Library including Reference materials, but may not check out books, CDs, DVDs, or other Library materials.

Checking-Out Library Materials

Books and Periodicals

Once you have found the materials that you want, take your selection to the Checkout Counter. Give them and your library card to the desk attendant, who will check the materials out to you for a two-week period. You may renew at the end of the two-week period twice for a total of six weeks in all.

Other Materials

You must request videos, cassette tapes and compact discs at the Check-Out Desk by call number. They are shelved behind the Check-Out Desk. You may check out videos, DVDs, cassette tapes, and compact discs for one week. Follow the procedure used for books.

Chabot College Library Materials

You may request Chabot materials at the Check-Out Desk or online. The materials will be sent to LPC Library and held for you at the Check-Out Desk for you to check out. Chabot deliveries come to LPC on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You may also go to the Chabot College Library and use your Las Positas College Library Card there.

Number of Items Borrowed

Students, faculty and staff may have a maximum of ten (10) items (including any combination of books, CDs, or DVDs) checked out at one time. In addition, they may have five (5) print periodicals and two (2) course reserve items checked out at the same time.

Renewing Library Materials

Library materials from LPC and Chabot Libraries can be renewed by several methods:

ONLINE: LPC and Chabot Library materials can be renewed over the online catalog if the borrower's account is in good standing. Account problems that may prevent an online renewal include:

  • reaching the maximum number of renewals - twice
  • fines and other library charges
  • a block initiated by Admissions and Records or Chabot Library because of an unpaid bill or other account problem
  • an upcoming expiration date in your borrower record--This can occur if you are no longer employed at the College or enrolled here as a student.
  • Overdue items that cannot be renewed via the Online Catalog such as reserve books, magazines and periodicals

The following items CANNOT be renewed:

  • Items that have been requested by another patron. These items should be returned immediately to the Library on their due date.
  • Items that are normally non-circulating, but were loaned to you on an exception basis, such as Reference Materials.
  • Reserve items.
  • Overdue items
  • Items borrowed by Interlibrary Loan

Overdue Notices, Overdue Fines, Lost and Damaged Materials and Billing

Overdue notices are issued as a courtesy to all library users. However, non-receipt of an overdue notice does not exempt a borrower from applicable fines or billings. To avoid overdue notices, fines, and bills please renew your materials before the due date stamped in each item

Late Return Fees:


Fines per item:

  • 1 hour reserves - $.25 per hour
  • 1 day / 3 day / 7 day reserves - $1.00 per day
  • AV (Videos, DVDs, CDs, Tapes, etc.) - $1.00 per day
  • Books and Periodicals - $.25 per day

Fines should be paid at the Check-Out Desk, Building 2000, Learning Resources Building. For questions about an overdue notice or a library bill, consult the Library staff at the Check-Out Desk or call 925.424.1151. Outstanding library charges in excess of $5.00 will automatically block borrowing privileges. Outstanding library bills may also prevent registration for classes, graduation, or requests for transcripts. Payment by cash or check only.

Lost and Damaged Items:

Student is responsible for lost or damaged items. Charges are determined by the replacement cost plus $10.00 for processing.


Exceptions to the fines schedule may be made at the discretion of the Library Coordinator.

Summer and Winter Break Check-Out Policy

Students, faculty, and staff may check out library resources (books, periodicals, audiovisual materials) during the summer and winter break. For students, proof of enrollment in the current or upcoming semester is required. All regular loan periods and overdue fines apply.

Returning Library Materials

Borrowers may return LPC and Chabot library materials to the LPC Check-Out Desk regardless of where the item was originally charged out. Because library materials are discharged from the borrower's account at the location to which they are returned and prior to being shipped back to the owning library, borrowers are not held responsible for items that are lost in shipping. Library materials can also be returned to the bookdrops on the Campus. Return receipts are available upon request at any circulation desk.
