Library Resources | General Internet Links | Bay Area Parks, Wildlife Preserves and Other Areas | Selected California Wildlife Internet Links
There are many new books on animals in the stacks and in reference to check out. Use the Library Catalog link above to find the books LPC Library owns by keyword or subject search. The following books and Internet guides are useful for observing animal behavior:
Bekoff, Marc, ed. Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior. Westport, CT: Greenwood Pr., 2004. Ref QL750.3.E53 2004 v.1-3
Handbook of the Birds of the World. Barcelona: Lynx Editions, 1992 - 2004. V. 1 - 9. Ref QL673.H265 1992-2004 v.1 - 9
These references include general overall descriptions of each bird family and general species accounts. The family texts are lengthy and readable, and include many fields of scientific investigation and the latest discoveries in biology, ecology and relationships of the family in question. They are comprehensive at the family level. The species accounts, on the other hand, are highly condensed, aimed at giving as much information as possible (on taxonomy, distribution, descriptive notes, habitat, food and feeding, breeding, movements, and status and conservation). The sections on status and conservation in the family texts and the species accounts are often extensive. Beautiful and detailed color plates and color photographs are included. 1. Ostrich to Ducks; 2. New World Vultures to Guineafowl; 3. Hoatzin to Auks; 4. Sandgrouse to Cuckoos; 5. Barn-owls to Hummingbirds; 6. Mousebirds to Hornbills; 7. Jacamars to Woodpeckers; 8. Broadbills to Tapaculos; 9. Cotingas to Pipits and Wagtails.
