Cross Country Coaches
Steve Navarro is in his 18th year as Head Cross-Country Coach, after establishing the program in 1996. Coach Navarro ran at Banning High School in the tough Los Angeles City School District. “Our cross-country team in HS had one loss in three years in league, and we beat that team later in the year.” I was the 6th place finisher in the half-mile and we were 5th as a team in the mile relay in the L.A. City Championships (that was one place away from going to State).
Here at LPC we have had many great successes, including finishing in the top 10 in the State Championships three times and second in the Coast Conference five times. We have had two “Conference Champion” and the team has won many medals at the Conference Championships. Two years ago we were 3rd in our Nor-Cal Meet and this is the first ever top three finish by any LPC team in the history of the college.
One of the biggest accomplishment in our cross-country program is the fact that, Las Positas College runners have twice been selected as the top California Community College Scholar Team in the state. One team had the highest G.P.A. of any team in California. Last year two students were recognized as "All Scholar Athletes," meaning that they were voted on by the whole state for this honor (3.68 & 3.75 GPA's). And they were the only two cross-country runners in the state to receive this honor and a certificate to go with the award. We are excited to report that many have received scholarships and scholarship offers in recent years and one student received a full-ride to a local private college (Holy Names) for his excellence as a student-athlete.
Our Men’s team is on track to make it to the State Championships this year and the Women have a shot to make it to the state meet as well. We encourage all runners to come out and run regardless if they are elite runners or if they just want to train for fitness or a 5 K. We will gladly coach them and guide their improvement and help facilitate a positive experience as a student-athlete.
