CalWORKS/CARE Winter Solstice Reception
Reception to Benefit Student Families in Need
The CalWORKS/CARE Winter Solstice Reception will be held on Friday, December 16th 2005 from 1:00-3:00pm in the Staff Lounge. During the party, gift card assistance will be provided to CalWORKs families who are in need over the holidays.
The CalWORKS and CARE programs, which provide support to low-income parents who are receiving public assistance, are inviting all Las Positas College students, faculty, and staff to participate in their Winter Solstice Celebration by donating gift cards to parents who are a part of the CalWORKS and CARE programs on campus. Faculty and staff are also invited to attend the Winter Solstice Celebration Reception on December 16th.
According to CalWORKS Coordinator, Kimberly Tomlinson, the party for parents involved in the CAlWORKS and Care programs “celebrates student success and provides assistance to CalWORKs and CARE parents during a time of the year that can really be challenging for low-income students.” The CalWORKs/CARE Holiday program has expanded every year thanks to growth in community participation and assistance from companies Starbucks, Alden Lane Nursery, Costco and Macy’s. The Associated Students of Las Positas College (ASLPC) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) have also donated each year to this effort, as have student clubs on campus.
The Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS) Honor Society is supporting the gift card effort and will collect gift cards and check donations in Building 100 until December 14th in the AGS folder behind the reception desk. Checks should be made out to AGS with “gift cards” written in the memo section; all donations will be used to purchase gift cards for the parents who participate in the CalWORKs and CARE program. Those wishing to donate should give gift cards or check donations to the receptionist in Building 100 to be placed in the AGS folder, or bring gift cards to Building 900 by December 14th. Ms. Tomlinson has asked that if the value is not already indicated on the gift card by the merchant, the dollar amount be written on the gift card by the donor.
Target, Wal-Mart, Ross, Mervyns, Kohl’s, Toys R Us, Michael’s Arts and Crafts, Best Buy, McDonalds, Starbucks are all preferred gift cards. Gasoline gift cards and Visa gift cards are also welcomed.
