The Queen of Soccer, LPC Coach Sissi

For Brazil, Sissi is the best in the world. For us, Sissi is the Queen of Soccer."

1999 Brazilian Coach, Wilson Oliveira Rica

December, 2007

Many of the greatest soccer players in the world have worn the jersey number 10. In the history of soccer, names like Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho are known worldwide as some of the finest players with a ball at their feet. Another player recognized for her soccer mastery and who also wore the number 10 is Sisleide do Amor Lima, better known to the world as just "Sissi"...

Fall 2007 Season Comes to an End

November 20, 2007

The Lady Hask season started strong rostering 14 players, the most we have started a season with in several years! As the season progressed we added several players and dropped a few due to injury. It was exciting to have the numbers and the ability to have strong practice sessions due to sheer numbers.

Our team was comprised of mostly freshman with only 3 returning players. This gave us a number of growing opportunities. The freshman brought a fresh energy while the sophomores lead the team with commitment and dedication.

The opening of the ACE was instrumental in facilitating our commitment to student athletes. Many athletes used the facility and thus improved their GPA. Although we had several challenges on the field, it was refreshing to see several of the Women Soccer players truly dedicated to their academic commitment. Their pursuit of academic excellence paid off as several of the players have already been accepted at four year universities!

Stacie Alberico was a strong addition to our coaching staff. She brought a high level of commitment and expectation for the players. Her dedication and her professional level of play brought a new level of intensity to our team. Geoff continued his work both on and off the field. He was instrumental in scheduling our games and scouting the opponents.

Our season record was not congruent with the knowledge the players gained throughout the season. There was marked improvement in speed, agility and first touches throughout the season. The Hawks persevered despite a dismal scorecard.

One final note: This team did some awesome work off the field. Their commitment to a family in need was recognized college wide and they will be remembered for their large hearts and generous contributions.

Recap of 2006 Season

12/2006

All and all the LadyHawks Soccer program had a great season. We started off pre-season with a bang and the influence of freshman players was felt both on and off the field. The team really started to "gel" after a few wins were under their belt. The women were able to execute their plays on the field and keep their grades up off of the field. They finished with 13 wins, 7 losses and 2 ties; and a team GPA of 3.0.

The LadyHawks got hungry at the end of the season when the playoff's were in reach. As they approached, each player stepped up their game and they clinched the 14th playoff spot, first time in LPC history. Although they lost in the first round of the playoffs, they gave it their all and held their heads high.

The season ended with a banquet awarding several of the players with many well deserved honors. Marcia Tafarel was voted MVP by her fellow teammates and the NSCAA voted her " All American" and placed her on the All American First Team. This was a huge honor for Tafa, the LPC soccer program and LPC in general. Tafa flew to Indiana to receive her award and it is now place in the LPC ! Hall of Fame wall in the PE complex.

Las Positas Student Named All-American

38-Year-Old Marcia Tafarel is First All-American in Women’s Sports at College

Coach Smyth and Athlete Tafarel receive All American award

Livermore , CA –The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has named Marcia Tafarel as a First Team All-American player. The designation marks the first time in the 16-year history of women’s intercollegiate sports at Las Positas College (LPC) that a woman has received the honor of First Team All-American. The NSCAA awards the highest honors for all players, student/athletes and coaches at every level in the game of soccer, from World Cup Qualifying of national teams to coaching licensing schools.

Tafarel, or “Tafa” as she is commonly known, was presented the award on January 13 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Annual NSCAA Awards Banquet Luncheon during the National Convention. Her All-American pin, team picture and NSCAS certificate are on display in the women’s trophy case of the new physical education complex at LPC.

Tafa was also the Most Valuable Player for the LPC Lady Hawks, Player of the Year for the Coast Conference, First Team Nor/Cal State Team, and the Western Region Mid-Fielder of the Year. The string of honors bear even more weight when you consider that Tafa is 38-years old, a Brazilian national who moved to the United States just two years ago to attend school and learn English. Tafa didn’t even play on an organized women’s team until she was 14 years old.

“Soccer is very, very big in Brazil, but there were no competitive teams organized for young girls, just for boys,” says Tafa. “I began playing as a child with my brothers and neighbors, kicking the ball in the street.”

Tafa came to the United States in 2004 as a player who believed she had retired from playing soccer, just looking to play for fun and perhaps secure a coaching job. Her best friend, Sisi Do Amor, assisted her in adapting to her new lifestyle in the U.S.

In addition to maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in her classes at Las Positas, Tafa has realized her dream of staying in the game she loves so much, and plays and coaches soccer in the region. She is currently being recruited by several 4-year colleges.
