DSPS Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for special accommodations through the Las Positas College DSPS program, a student must have a disability which is verified by a certificated DSPS staff member. As defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, an individual with a disability is someone who “has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a history of such impairment, or is perceived as having such impairment.”

Eligibility is verified during an interactive intake process between the DSPS certificated staff member and the student in one of the following ways:

  1. A review of documentation by certificated staff that is provided by appropriate agencies or certified/licensed professionals outside of DSPS; or
  2. Observation by a certificated DSPS staff member.

For many students applying to the DSPS program, a copy of the most recent Individual Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan, psychological evaluation, learning disability test results, medical documentation, clinical assessment, or documentation from an appropriate agency (i.e., local school districts, Veteran's Affairs, Regional Centers) and/or certified or licensed professional is all that is needed to satisfy the eligibility requirement.

Potential students are encouraged to call our office at (925) 424-1510 to learn more about eligibility requirements and to get answers to specific questions.
